Look Out For The Divers, Little Fish!

Finding Nemo was a great movie! If you haven’t seen it, you should! And it’s not just a kid movie—there’s some great adult humor that the kids don’t catch at all.

There are some great scenes in the movie but the one scene I think about when we dive is the one where Nemo is caught by the divers. From the perspective of the fish, the huge diver comes into his view and all he sees is a mask with blinking eyes. Then, a flash of light (the divers are taking pictures), and a net that scoops up poor Nemo.

So I translate that scene from my perspective as the diver. We spy a Toadfish, underneath a ledge. Letting out a few breaths lowers my body so I’m looking eye-to-eye with the Toadfish. If I’m lucky, I find a patch of sand to anchor myself against the current by sticking one finger into the sand. The other hand holds the camera. Up comes the camera between me and the Toadfish. As I look into the viewfinder, I see the Toadfish inch back a little while the fins on either side of his body start quivering. Pressing the lever part way auto focuses the camera on the Toadfish. Continuing to press the lever fires the flash and takes the picture of the Toadfish.

Then, I think, poor Toadfish! Is he blind now from the flash? Is he scared of me, the big diver? What he's probably thinking is, “What the hell just happened?”
